Mating Disruption in row-crops requires specialized slow-release formulations which are suitable for the target crops and insects, and which can be distributed in the field using existing farming equipment. BioPhero offers bio-produced active pheromone ingredients, and supports your efforts to establish end-use products for your desired pest targets through the development and registration phases.


The biology of insects and the chemistry of their pheromone systems is an exciting field of research. BioPhero is itself a university spin-out, and we have several open academic collaborations aiming to advance the science of pheromone-based mating disruption. Integrated Pest Management requires new effective and affordable biological modes of action to become a strong alternative or complement to GMO seeds and chemical pesticides. BioPhero is a consortium partner in OLEFINE, a Horizon 2020 project funded by the European Union. Together with academic and commercial partners, BioPhero is working to develop and scale the fermentation processes for pheromones. Other consortium members focus on basic technology development and testing of the products. The purpose of the OLEFINE project is innovation, more specifically making pheromone-based mating disruption solutions available in row-crops by improving the production efficiency and commercial viability to a point where mainstream acceptance in row crops becomes possible.

The PHERA project aims to further mature and scale up effective biotech-based methods for producing pheromones and application technology, and to drive commercialization into major row crops. The PHERA consortium brings together expertise in production, formulation, and scale-up, and consists of companies specialized in pheromone application: SEDQ Healthy Crops (Spain), ISCA Europe (France), Russell IPM (UK), and Novagrica (Greece), and BioPhero in the field of bio-based pheromone production. The consortium is completed with scale-up expertise from BPF (Netherlands), and life-cycle assessment capabilities from Fraunhofer (Germany).

The Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking has awarded a €6.4 million grant for the 2020-2022 period to the consortium.

At BBI JU we are very proud to fund the PHERA project which aims to develop and commercialise bio-based insect pheromones for Crop protection. Sustainable crop protection is a key challenge that supports the contribution of BBI JU to the EU Green Deal and the need for agricultural productivity to significantly rise by 2050 while keeping biodiversity.
